Geometry - Transformation

All students (if they were present) attended workshops on both algebra and geometry, relating to patterns. These were intended to support the students in their costume designing and making.

In my geometry workshops, the students were introduced to the concept of transformation. Just like a toy transformer, shapes can be changed too!

Shapes can be:
  • Rotated (turned)
  • Reflected (flipped)
  • Translated (slid - up/down, or left/right)

Kowhaiwhai patterns provide rich examples of these transformations.

During the last session, the students were required to transform various numbers, with paint. Can you identify HOW they've been transformed in the examples below? See if you child/children can remember!
